A pair of 15th-century ink-on-silk scrolls by Genga, depicting bamboo in contrasting weather conditions.
This diptych by the Japanese artist Genga exemplifies the ink wash tradition of the Muromachi period. The work consists of two hanging scrolls, each presenting a distinct atmospheric condition through the depiction of bamboo. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, relying on varying concentrations of ink to suggest depth, texture, and the movement of air or water.
In the first scroll, the bamboo is rendered with delicate, precise strokes, suggesting the stillness and saturation of a rainy day. The background forms are obscured by a soft, misty wash, which creates a sense of spatial recession without the use of rigid perspective. The second scroll captures the bamboo in a more dynamic state, with the stalks and leaves bent by the force of the wind. The composition here is more active, with the diagonal lines of the foliage conveying the energy of the gusts.
Throughout both panels, the artist demonstrates a mastery of the brush, balancing the solid forms of rocks and terrain with the lighter, more ephemeral treatment of the bamboo. The silk support has aged to a warm, muted tone, which complements the ink work and adds to the overall aesthetic of quiet contemplation. These scrolls function as a study of nature in flux, focusing on the interaction between the plant life and the elements. The lack of colour forces the viewer to focus on the quality of the line and the subtle gradations of tone, which are the primary tools for establishing the mood of each scene. This diptych reflects the broader interest in nature and the seasons that defined much of the ink painting produced in Japan during this era, where the bamboo served as a common subject for its associations with resilience and flexibility.
