A masterfully executed nineteenth-century engraving by Luigi Calamatta, depicting the Ottoman Sultan Bajazet observing a shepherd in a pastoral setting.
This engraving by Luigi Calamatta, titled Bajazet et le Berger, depicts a scene of stark contrast between the powerful and the humble. The work is based on a painting by Jacques-Joseph Lecurieux. It captures the Ottoman Sultan Bajazet I, standing in a regal, cloaked posture, observing a shepherd who plays a flute while resting beneath a tree. The composition relies on the technical precision of the burin, a hallmark of Calamatta's skill as a master engraver.
The visual narrative focuses on the juxtaposition of the monarch's rigid, imposing presence against the relaxed, pastoral figure of the shepherd. Calamatta employs a range of tonal values to define the textures of the heavy fabric worn by the Sultan and the soft, naturalistic musculature of the shepherd. The background, featuring distant pyramids, suggests an exoticised setting common in nineteenth-century European art. The lighting is dramatic, casting long shadows that ground the figures in a specific, albeit theatrical, space.
Calamatta was a significant figure in the nineteenth-century printmaking world, known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the precise language of line engraving. This print demonstrates his command over light and shadow, creating a sense of volume that gives the figures a sculptural quality. The inclusion of the goat in the foreground and the subtle details of the landscape provide a sense of scale and atmosphere. This work offers a window into the period's fascination with historical and literary themes, rendered with the technical rigour expected of a professional engraver of the era.
