A classical study of Bacchus and putti, rendered in black chalk and white heightening on blue paper by Dutch artist Cornelis Holsteyn.
This drawing by Cornelis Holsteyn depicts a scene centred on the figure of Bacchus, surrounded by a group of putti. The composition is characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age, where classical mythology was frequently reinterpreted through a playful, often domestic lens. Holsteyn, a painter and draughtsman active in Amsterdam, was known for his classicising style, which often incorporated figures in various states of activity.
The work is executed in black chalk with white heightening on blue paper, a technique that allows for subtle tonal gradations and a sense of atmosphere. The blue paper provides a mid-tone ground, enabling the artist to build form through both shadow and light. The putti are shown in a variety of poses, interacting with a wine barrel and a goat, symbols traditionally associated with the god of wine. The arrangement of the figures creates a sense of movement, with some children climbing, others reclining, and one figure standing near the goat on the left side of the frame.
Holsteyn's approach to the human form is fluid, with soft contours that define the rounded shapes of the children. The background is suggested with light, gestural strokes, keeping the focus on the central group. The use of white heightening adds a sculptural quality to the figures, catching the light in a way that suggests volume and presence. This drawing reflects the interest in classical themes that persisted among Dutch artists of the seventeenth century, even as they developed their own distinct approaches to narrative and form. The work remains a fine example of the preparatory studies produced during this period, offering a glimpse into the artist's process and his ability to capture dynamic, multi-figure compositions with economy and grace.
