A delicate Southern Song dynasty bird-and-flower painting on silk, featuring chrysanthemums, insects, and millet in a traditional circular fan format.
This work, attributed to the artist Gong Jufi, originates from the Southern Song period. It is a classic example of the bird-and-flower genre, which gained significant popularity during this era. The composition is executed on a circular silk fan format, a common medium for courtly art of the time. The scene depicts a quiet moment in an autumn garden, featuring a cluster of chrysanthemums, a stalk of millet, two butterflies, and a grasshopper.
The artist employs a delicate brush technique to render the flora and fauna. The chrysanthemums are painted with soft, muted tones, while the insects are observed with a high degree of precision. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the flowers at the lower left countered by the upward curve of the millet stalk and the placement of the butterflies. The negative space surrounding the subjects is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the subtle interactions between the elements. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden-brown hue, which provides a neutral backdrop for the painted details.
Such works were often produced for the imperial court or the scholar-official class. They reflect a period of artistic development where observation of the natural world was highly valued. The inclusion of red collector seals indicates the work passed through various private collections over the centuries, a common history for pieces of this provenance. The painting demonstrates the technical skill required to balance realism with a decorative sensibility, characteristic of Song dynasty aesthetics. It remains a quiet study of seasonal change, capturing the fleeting nature of autumn through the lens of traditional Chinese ink and colour techniques.
