A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Ishiyama-dera temple under a full moon, part of the Eight Views of Omi series.
Autumn Moon at Ishiyama is a woodblock print from the series Eight Views of Omi, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the 1830s. The composition depicts the Ishiyama-dera temple, situated on a rocky cliff overlooking Lake Biwa. A full moon hangs in the upper sky, casting a pale light over the water and the distant mountains. Hiroshige employs a subtle colour gradient, known as bokashi, to transition the sky from a deep indigo at the top to a lighter tone near the horizon. This technique creates a sense of atmospheric depth.
The print focuses on the quiet observation of nature. The temple buildings are integrated into the craggy terrain, while the long bridge stretching across the lake provides a horizontal anchor to the scene. The artist uses precise, thin lines to define the rock formations and the architectural details of the temple. The inclusion of a cartouche in the upper right corner contains the series title and a poem, which was a common feature in Japanese printmaking of this period.
This work reflects the tradition of the Eight Views, a theme originating in Chinese art that was adapted by Japanese artists to represent specific locations. Hiroshige captures the stillness of the evening, using a limited palette to convey the cool temperature of an autumn night. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige to translate his designs into final impressions. The balance between the solid, dark mass of the cliff and the expansive, open space of the lake creates a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the composition. This print remains a representative example of the artist's ability to evoke a specific mood through the depiction of a well-known site.
