Kodama Katei was a practitioner of the Bunjinga tradition, a style of Japanese painting that drew inspiration from Chinese literati art. This work, Autumn in Myriad Valleys, demonstrates his command of ink wash techniques and the traditional sansui format. The composition follows a vertical orientation, guiding the viewer from the foreground dwellings and sparse trees upward into a series of craggy, mist-shrouded peaks.
The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle washes of ink and muted earth tones to define the terrain. The brushwork varies between precise, dry strokes for the rock faces and softer, blurred applications to suggest the presence of low-hanging clouds. These clouds act as negative space, separating the distinct tiers of the mountain range and providing a sense of atmospheric depth. Small architectural elements, such as huts and a bridge, are tucked into the lower sections, offering a sense of human scale against the imposing natural forms.
Katei, who was active during the Meiji period, maintained a connection to classical aesthetics while working in an era of rapid modernisation. His approach to the subject matter reflects a scholarly appreciation for the solitude and quietude associated with mountain retreats. The calligraphic inscriptions in the upper right corner are integral to the work, balancing the visual weight of the mountains and providing context through poetic reference. The silk support contributes to the overall texture, allowing the ink to settle with a soft, diffused quality that enhances the seasonal mood of the piece.
