Aurora - Morris Louis

A seminal work from the Veil series, this piece demonstrates the artist's technique of pouring thinned pigment onto raw canvas to create translucent, layered colour.

Aurora is a representative example of the Veil series produced by Morris Louis during the late 1950s. In this work, the artist applied Magna, an acrylic resin paint, to unprimed canvas. By thinning the pigment to a fluid consistency, Louis allowed the colour to soak into the weave of the fabric rather than sitting on the surface. This technique creates a sense of transparency and depth, where layers of pigment overlap to form new hues.

The composition features two dark, vertical bands that frame a central, translucent area of muted tones. These outer forms appear to bleed into the surrounding negative space, suggesting a downward flow of gravity. The central section contains subtle variations of ochre, grey, and soft pink, which interact with the white of the raw canvas. Unlike the gestural brushwork associated with earlier abstract styles, Louis removed the evidence of the artist's hand. The paint appears to have been poured or manipulated through the tilting of the canvas, resulting in a smooth, unified surface.

Louis was a member of the Washington Color School, a group of artists who prioritised the properties of colour and the flatness of the picture plane. By eliminating traditional perspective and figurative elements, the work focuses entirely on the optical experience of the viewer. The interaction between the dark, solid edges and the lighter, permeable centre creates a tension that defines the visual character of the piece. This approach to painting shifted the focus toward the physical relationship between the medium and the support, a method that influenced subsequent developments in abstract art.
