Atelierhoek met stoel en kunstkast, te Den Haag, Nieuwe Schoolstraat 28 - Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande

A quiet, atmospheric pastel drawing depicting the artist's studio in The Hague, featuring a solitary chair and a collection of framed works.

This pastel drawing captures a quiet corner of the artist's studio located at Nieuwe Schoolstraat 28 in The Hague. Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande, a figure associated with the later years of the Hague School, documents his own working environment with a focus on atmosphere and light. The composition is anchored by a solitary chair placed upon a red rug, positioned before a wall adorned with a collection of small framed works. To the left, a tall storage unit holds various materials, while a wooden cabinet on the right displays further framed pieces.

The medium of pastel allows for a soft, diffused quality of light that permeates the room. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on the texture of the paper to build up the forms of the furniture and the wall. The arrangement of the small pictures on the wall suggests a personal curation, reflecting the artist's own aesthetic environment. The perspective is straightforward, inviting the viewer to observe the space as it existed in the late nineteenth century.

Storm van 's-Gravesande was known for his etchings and drawings, often depicting coastal scenes or quiet interiors. This specific work provides a rare glimpse into the private sphere of the artist. The lack of human presence emphasises the stillness of the studio. The attention to the textures of the wood, the fabric of the chair, and the paper of the drawings demonstrates the artist's technical skill in handling pastel. The work remains a document of the domestic and professional life of a Dutch artist during this period, capturing the specific character of a Hague interior.
