A serene impressionist study of the French countryside near Montreuil, featuring autumnal trees and a quiet rural village.
James Charles, a British painter associated with the New English Art Club, produced this work during his time in France. The painting captures a rural view near Montreuil, characterised by the soft, diffused light typical of the region. The composition is anchored by a series of slender, autumnal trees that punctuate the middle ground, their foliage rendered in warm ochres and browns. These vertical elements provide a rhythmic structure against the expansive, pale blue sky.
In the foreground, the artist employs a broken brushstroke technique to depict the textured surface of the field. Small figures and grazing livestock are integrated into the scene, providing a sense of scale and daily activity. The distant village, with its modest spires, is suggested through light, gestural marks, maintaining the atmospheric quality of the work. Charles focuses on the interplay between the earthy tones of the ground and the cooler, airy tones of the atmosphere above.
This piece reflects the influence of French Impressionism on British artists of the late nineteenth century. Charles avoids rigid outlines, preferring to build form through colour and light. The palette remains grounded in naturalistic tones, avoiding excessive saturation to maintain a sense of quiet observation. The work demonstrates a careful balance between the open space of the field and the verticality of the trees, creating a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. It is a study of a specific moment in the French countryside, captured with a focus on the transient qualities of light and the textures of the rural environment. The painting remains a representative example of the plein air approach adopted by many British painters who travelled to France to refine their practice during this period.
