A striking woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicting the actor Arashi Rikan II in a dramatic kabuki performance.
This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei captures the actor Arashi Rikan II in the role of the folk hero Danshichi Kurōbei. The scene is drawn from the kabuki play 'Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami', or 'Mirror of Naniwa: The Summer Festival'. Hokuei, a prominent artist of the Kamigata school based in Osaka, was known for his focus on the theatricality of the kabuki stage. Unlike the more stylised Edo prints, Kamigata works often prioritised the specific facial features and expressions of individual actors.
In this composition, the actor is depicted in a crouched, dynamic posture. He holds a sword between his teeth, a gesture that conveys tension and immediate action. The figure is set against a dark, atmospheric background that fades into a lighter foreground, creating a sense of depth and focus on the performer. The presence of footprints on the ground suggests a struggle or a path taken through mud, adding a narrative element to the static image. The actor's costume, featuring a red garment and a patterned outer robe, provides a contrast to the sombre tones of the background. The calligraphic inscriptions at the top of the print identify the actor and the play, maintaining the traditional integration of text and image common in Japanese printmaking.
This work reflects the specific aesthetic of the Osaka print tradition, which favoured a more realistic approach to portraiture. The artist captures the intensity of the performance, focusing on the physical exertion and the dramatic persona of the character. The print serves as a record of a specific theatrical moment, preserving the appearance and style of a popular actor of the early nineteenth century. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre, while the surrounding space remains uncluttered to maintain the focus on the actor's dramatic stance.
