A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a quiet scene at the Arai station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts Arai, one of the stops along the Tokaido road, the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. The composition captures a quiet moment at a station, featuring travellers and pack horses resting near a structure that resembles a checkpoint or a local inn. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, utilising distinct outlines and a restrained palette to define the figures and the surrounding geography.
The scene is organised with a sense of order, typical of Hokusai's early work in the Ukiyo-e tradition. The horses, central to the composition, are rendered with attention to their posture, while the human figures are shown in various states of activity, from resting to attending to cargo. The background features simplified, rolling hills and horizontal cloud formations, which provide a sense of distance without overwhelming the foreground action. The use of flat colour areas and calligraphic line work creates a balanced visual rhythm across the print.
As a member of the Ukiyo-e school, Hokusai was interested in the daily life of the Japanese people and the geography of the country. This series, while less famous than his later depictions of Mount Fuji, demonstrates his ability to observe and record the specific character of different regions. The print serves as a record of travel culture in the early 19th century, documenting the logistics of movement and the architecture of the road. The inclusion of the series title and the specific location in the upper right corner follows the standard conventions of the period, providing context for the viewer. This print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Hokusai and his block carvers, maintaining clarity in the details of the architecture and the textures of the horses.
