A refined Neoclassical engraving by Laurent Guyot, featuring symmetrical arabesque designs with classical figures, floral garlands, and urns.
This print originates from the fourth volume of a series dedicated to arabesque designs, originally conceived by the French artist Étienne de Lavallée-Poussin during his time in Rome. The engraving, executed by Laurent Guyot, captures the refined aesthetic of late eighteenth-century Neoclassicism. The composition is divided into two vertical panels, each displaying a symmetrical arrangement of classical motifs.
The left panel features a smoking censer, or rookvat, positioned above a central axis that includes a grotesque mask and two hounds at the base. A small putto floats within a cloud formation near the top, surrounded by delicate floral garlands. The right panel presents a female figure standing upon a pedestal, her arms outstretched to support hanging swags of flowers. Above her, a bird in flight occupies the upper register, while the entire structure is supported by a decorative urn.
Guyot employs a precise, delicate line quality to render the light and shadow, creating a sense of depth within the two-dimensional space. The work reflects the period's fascination with the rediscovery of Roman wall paintings, particularly those found at Pompeii and Herculaneum. These designs were intended for use by interior decorators and craftsmen, providing a template for wall panels, furniture inlays, or textile patterns. The balanced, airy arrangement of the elements demonstrates the restraint and clarity characteristic of the Neoclassical style, moving away from the heavier ornamentation of the preceding Rococo era. The print serves as a record of the collaborative process between draughtsmen and engravers in the production of decorative pattern books during the Enlightenment.
