A minimalist still life by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, featuring a single apple and cherry set against a geometric blue fabric background.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, a significant figure in early twentieth-century Russian art, produced this still life in 1917. The composition focuses on two pieces of fruit, an apple and a cherry, placed upon a blue, folded fabric surface. Petrov-Vodkin is known for his unique approach to spatial perspective, often referred to as spherical perspective, which he employed to create a sense of volume and curvature within his subjects.
In this work, the artist uses a deliberate colour palette to create contrast. The warm, golden-red tones of the apple and the deep crimson of the cherry sit against a cool, blue background. The fabric beneath the fruit is rendered with angular, geometric folds, which provide a structured base for the organic shapes of the fruit. The brushwork is precise, allowing for a smooth transition of light across the surface of the apple, while the cherry is depicted with a singular, bright highlight that suggests a glossy texture.
Petrov-Vodkin often sought to reconcile traditional painting techniques with the experimental spirit of the Russian avant-garde. By isolating these two objects, he invites the viewer to observe the relationship between form, colour, and space. The simplicity of the subject matter allows the viewer to focus on the technical execution and the interplay of light. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to elevate a modest domestic scene into a study of geometry and colour theory. The work remains a clear example of his interest in the structural properties of objects and the way they occupy space within a two-dimensional plane, reflecting his broader investigations into the nature of visual perception during a period of rapid change in the Russian art world.
