A scene from the life of Saint Francis, this fresco depicts the simultaneous visions of Fra Agostino and Bishop Guido within a structured architectural setting.
This fresco is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, located within the Bardi Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Giotto employs his characteristic approach to narrative clarity, placing the figures within a structured architectural setting that suggests physical space. The scene captures two distinct moments of divine revelation: the deathbed vision of Fra Agostino and the simultaneous apparition to Bishop Guido of Arezzo.
The composition is divided by a central architectural element, which allows the artist to present two separate locations within a single frame. On the left, the friars gather around the dying Fra Agostino, who sits upright in bed as he experiences his vision. On the right, Bishop Guido lies in his own chamber, witnessing the same event. Giotto uses the architecture to guide the viewer through the narrative, employing a muted palette of ochre, terracotta, and soft greys that is typical of his work in the Bardi Chapel.
The figures exhibit a sense of weight and volume, a departure from the flatter, more stylised depictions common in the preceding Byzantine tradition. Their gestures are restrained, focusing on the internal experience of the miracle rather than overt theatricality. The architectural details, including the patterned wall surfaces and the vaulted structures, provide a sense of order and realism. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to organise complex multi-part narratives into a coherent visual sequence. The focus remains on the human reaction to the supernatural, rendered with a degree of observation that influenced the development of Western painting for generations.
