This work is one of twenty-four paintings commissioned by Marie de Medici for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. It forms part of a cycle intended to glorify the life and political legitimacy of the Queen Mother. Rubens employs a complex allegorical structure to merge historical events with mythological narrative.

The composition is divided into two distinct spheres. On the left, the apotheosis of King Henry IV occurs as he ascends to Olympus, welcomed by Jupiter and Saturn. Below this celestial transition, the earthly realm depicts the proclamation of the regency. Marie de Medici sits in mourning attire, receiving the orb of state from Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. The presence of allegorical figures, including Victory and various personifications of France, reinforces the divine right and political stability of her rule.

Rubens utilises a dynamic, diagonal arrangement to guide the viewer across the canvas. His application of paint is fluid, with warm, golden tones dominating the upper register, contrasting with the more grounded, shadowed hues of the courtly scene below. The muscularity of the figures and the sense of movement are characteristic of the artist's mature style. Every element, from the discarded armour to the watchful hound, serves to construct a narrative of transition and authority.
