A study of the Apostle Simon by Flemish Mannerist Joos van Winghe, executed in pen, ink, and grey wash on paper.
This drawing depicts the Apostle Simon, rendered with the characteristic stylistic traits of Northern Mannerism. Joos van Winghe, a Flemish painter who spent significant time in Frankfurt, utilised a combination of pen and ink with grey wash to define the figure. The composition focuses on the heavy, voluminous drapery that envelops the subject, creating a sense of weight and movement typical of the period. The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat and holds a book, traditional attributes associated with the apostle.
The line quality is deliberate, showing the artist's focus on anatomical structure beneath the fabric. The wash application provides depth, suggesting shadows within the folds of the garments and grounding the figure in a subtle, atmospheric space. Van Winghe was known for his ability to integrate Italianate influences with the traditions of his Flemish training, resulting in figures that possess both elegance and a certain dramatic tension. This study reflects the technical proficiency required for larger-scale religious commissions, where such preparatory drawings served as essential guides for composition and form.
The paper shows signs of age, with a muted, neutral tone that complements the monochromatic ink and wash palette. The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, a classic pose that adds a sense of naturalism to the otherwise stylised execution of the clothing. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, the artist creates a three-dimensional presence on the two-dimensional surface. This work provides insight into the working methods of a late sixteenth-century artist, demonstrating the careful planning involved in the creation of religious iconography. It remains a clear example of the draughtsmanship prevalent in the circles of the late Renaissance and early Mannerist period in Northern Europe.
