A fine art print of a Baroque ink drawing by Jan Claudius de Cock, depicting the mythological transformation of Daphne into a laurel tree.
This drawing by the Flemish sculptor and draughtsman Jan Claudius de Cock depicts the classical myth of Apollo and Daphne. The composition captures the moment of transformation, as Daphne begins to turn into a laurel tree to escape the pursuit of the god Apollo. De Cock employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures, reflecting his background as a sculptor who often used sketches to explore three-dimensional form and movement.
In the centre, Apollo reaches towards Daphne, whose arms are already sprouting branches. To the right, a river god reclines amidst reeds, observing the scene, while a small Cupid figure hovers above, holding a bow. The oval format suggests this work was intended as a preparatory study for a relief or a decorative panel, common in the Baroque period for architectural ornamentation. The light, gestural quality of the ink work provides insight into the artist's process, showing how he constructed dynamic poses through minimal, confident strokes.
Jan Claudius de Cock was based in Antwerp and later Brussels, where he produced numerous works for ecclesiastical and secular commissions. His style is characteristic of the late Baroque, prioritising movement and emotional narrative. This print captures the delicate nature of the original ink lines, preserving the spontaneity of the artist's hand. It is a fine example of how mythological themes were interpreted through the lens of 18th-century European draughtsmanship, focusing on the tension between human form and natural elements. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the eye across the oval frame, creating a sense of narrative progression from the pursuit on the left to the final metamorphosis on the right.
