A detailed etching by Christian Bernhard Rode depicting the classical story of Apelles and the cobbler, capturing a moment of artistic critique.
This etching by Christian Bernhard Rode depicts the classical anecdote of the Greek painter Apelles and a cobbler. According to Pliny the Elder, Apelles would hide behind his paintings to listen to public criticism. When a cobbler pointed out a mistake in the footwear of a figure, Apelles corrected it. However, when the cobbler began to criticise other parts of the anatomy, Apelles emerged to advise him to stick to his trade, famously stating that a shoemaker should not judge beyond his shoes.
Rode captures the moment of interaction between the artist and the critic. The painter sits before his easel, brush in hand, while the cobbler stands to the right, gesturing towards the painting. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to draw the eye towards the canvas. The background features architectural elements that suggest an ancient setting, typical of the period's interest in classical antiquity. The etching technique allows for varied textures, from the rough clothing of the cobbler to the smooth drapery of the figure on the canvas.
Christian Bernhard Rode was a prominent figure in the Berlin art scene during the eighteenth century. His work often drew upon historical and mythological themes, reflecting the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment. This print demonstrates his technical proficiency in etching, using cross-hatching and line work to create depth and shadow. The scene serves as a commentary on the nature of expertise and the reception of art, a subject that remained relevant throughout the eighteenth century. The inclusion of the date 1773 in the lower corner confirms its production during the height of his career. This museum-grade print captures the fine details of the original plate, preserving the character of Rode's line work for contemporary display.
