Beskrivning
A portrait of the Italian artist Antonio Mancini, painted by John Singer Sargent in 1901 with loose, expressive brushwork.
John Singer Sargent painted this portrait of the Italian artist Antonio Mancini in 1901. The two men shared a mutual respect, and Sargent frequently visited Mancini in Rome. This work captures the subject with a direct, unvarnished gaze, reflecting the close professional connection between the two painters.
Sargent employs a dark, moody palette that pushes the figure forward from the background. The light source is focused, illuminating Mancini's face and his hand, which rests near his chest. The brushwork is loose and confident, a hallmark of Sargent's mature style. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest form through the application of paint and the contrast between light and shadow. The background remains largely obscured, which keeps the viewer's attention fixed on the sitter's expression and the specific gesture of his hand.
This portrait demonstrates Sargent's ability to convey character through economy of means. The paint application is thick in areas of highlight, creating a tactile quality that contrasts with the thinner, darker washes used for the clothing and the surrounding space. It is a study in personality and artistic camaraderie, rendered with the technical facility that defined Sargent's career as a portraitist. The composition is intimate, suggesting a private moment between peers rather than a formal commission. By focusing on the sitter's features and the expressive quality of his hand, Sargent provides a psychological dimension to the image. The work remains a clear example of his approach to portraiture at the turn of the twentieth century, where the physical presence of the sitter is prioritised over decorative surroundings.

Antonio Mancini - John Singer Sargent
Artist Biography
John Singer Sargent
He was born in Florence to American expatriate parents and grew up moving between European cities. He never lived in America until he was middle-aged. He studied under Carolus-Duran in Paris, who taught him to paint directly from observation without underdrawing: load the brush, find the right tone, put it down in one stroke. The method required extraordinary hand-eye coordination and supreme confidence. Sargent had both.
Madame X, painted in 1884, nearly ended his career. The portrait of Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau, an American socialite in Parisian society, showed her in a black dress with one shoulder strap hanging off. The Salon audience was scandalised. Sargent repainted the strap in its proper position but the damage was done. He left Paris for London and rebuilt.
In London he became the portraitist of choice for the Anglo-American upper class. The technique is astonishing: he painted quickly, in long single-session sittings, and the brushwork has a fluency that makes other portraitists look laborious. The Wyndham Sisters, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, and the portrait of Theodore Roosevelt show what he could do at full stretch.
He eventually did stop. After 1907 he largely abandoned portraits for watercolours and the murals at the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. The watercolours, painted on travels through Italy, Spain, and the Middle East, are looser and freer than the portraits and possibly better. He died in London in 1925, at sixty-nine.
