A classicising history painting by Gerard de Lairesse, depicting the dramatic narrative of Antiochus and Stratonice within a grand architectural setting.
Gerard de Lairesse, a prominent figure in the Dutch Golden Age, produced this work in 1673. The painting depicts a classical narrative derived from Plutarch, concerning the Seleucid prince Antiochus and his stepmother, Stratonice. The scene captures the moment of discovery, where the physician Erasistratus identifies the cause of the prince's illness as his secret love for his stepmother.
Lairesse employs a theatrical approach to composition, typical of his later career when he moved away from the influence of Rembrandt toward a more refined, classicising aesthetic. The figures are arranged with deliberate grace, set within an architectural space that suggests a grand interior. The lighting is carefully managed to guide the viewer across the scene, from the reclining figure of the prince to the central group of the king and queen. The drapery and textures of the clothing are rendered with precision, reflecting the artist's technical skill and his interest in the formal qualities of classical art.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative clarity with a sense of dramatic tension. The inclusion of classical statuary and architectural elements serves to ground the scene in an idealised antiquity, a common preoccupation for painters of the period who sought to elevate their subjects through historical and mythological themes. The composition is balanced, with the figures positioned to create a sense of depth and focus on the emotional exchange between the characters. As a master of the Dutch classicist style, Lairesse provides a window into the intellectual and artistic climate of the late seventeenth century, where the study of ancient texts and the pursuit of formal harmony were central to the practice of painting.
