A refined eighteenth-century portrait by Gainsborough Dupont, capturing the elegance of Anne Elizabeth Cholmley with fluid brushwork and soft lighting.
This portrait by Gainsborough Dupont depicts Anne Elizabeth Cholmley, who later became Lady Mulgrave. Dupont, the nephew and apprentice of Thomas Gainsborough, adopted much of his uncle's fluid brushwork and atmospheric approach to portraiture. The subject is presented in a bust-length format, typical of the late eighteenth-century British tradition, with her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer.
The composition focuses on the sitter's elaborate hairstyle, a fashion of the period, rendered with soft, feathery strokes that suggest volume and texture. Her attire includes a ruffled bodice and a dark shawl, which provides a contrast to the lighter tones of her skin and the powdered hair. The background is a muted, nebulous wash of colour, a technique frequently employed by the Gainsborough studio to ensure the subject remains the primary focus without the distraction of architectural or environmental detail.
Dupont's handling of the paint reveals a sensitivity to light, particularly in the way it catches the fabric of the ruffles and the subtle highlights on the sitter's face. The work captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the late Georgian era, reflecting the social status and fashion of the British aristocracy. As a practitioner within the Gainsborough circle, Dupont maintained a high level of technical proficiency, producing works that mirror the grace and refinement associated with the period. This print offers a clear view of the artist's ability to balance formal portraiture with a sense of individual character, providing an insight into the portrait conventions of the 1780s.
