This piece represents a traditional Indian anklet, known as a paizeb. Crafted from gold, the object displays the technical skill of 19th-century South Asian goldsmiths. The design features a circular band adorned with numerous small, spherical beads that create a dense, textured surface. Interspersed among these beads are small, triangular or conical elements that provide structural rhythm to the piece.
In Indian culture, the paizeb is a significant item of personal adornment. These items were often designed to produce a soft, melodic sound when the wearer moved, a quality achieved through the arrangement of the small, loose beads. The construction demonstrates a high level of precision, with each component linked to form a cohesive, circular frame.
