A powerful 1582 woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari depicting an angel supporting the body of Christ, rendered with dramatic Mannerist line work.
This woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari, dated 1582, represents the technical mastery of late sixteenth-century Italian printmaking. The composition depicts an angel cradling the lifeless body of Christ, a subject often referred to as the Pietà or the Man of Sorrows. Scolari employs a dramatic, muscular treatment of the figures, characteristic of the Mannerist style, where elongated forms and expressive tension take precedence over classical proportion.
The print demonstrates a sophisticated use of line to define volume and texture. The angel's wings and the flowing drapery are rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching that creates a sense of movement and depth. The contrast between the heavy, inert weight of Christ's body and the hovering, ethereal presence of the angel provides a clear emotional focus. In the foreground, the crown of thorns rests upon a stone ledge, serving as a symbolic reminder of the Passion. The background features a sparse, schematic landscape, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the central figures.
Scolari was active in Venice and is recognised for his large-scale woodcuts, which often pushed the boundaries of the medium. His ability to translate the painterly qualities of the Venetian school into the stark, monochromatic language of the woodblock is evident here. The bold, calligraphic lines define the musculature and the folds of fabric with precision, showing a clear departure from the softer tonal transitions found in contemporary engravings. This work remains a significant example of the graphic arts during the late Renaissance, capturing the dramatic intensity and stylistic experimentation of the period. The print is a study in light and shadow, achieved through the careful spacing of lines rather than the use of ink washes or grey tones, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship required for such a detailed relief print.
