A Neoclassical engraving by Giovanni Paolo Lasinio, depicting an angel with a lyre, based on a design by Richard Westall.
This engraving by Giovanni Paolo Lasinio depicts a celestial figure in flight, clutching a lyre. The composition draws from the Neoclassical tradition, prioritising clarity of form and balanced proportions. The figure is suspended amidst soft, cloud-like forms, with the drapery of the robes suggesting movement through the air. The artist employs precise hatching techniques to define the musculature of the angel and the texture of the wings, creating a sense of volume and depth on the two-dimensional surface.
Lasinio was a prolific Italian engraver, known for his ability to translate the works of other artists into the medium of print. This particular work is based on a design by the British painter Richard Westall. The inscription at the base, 'Minerva spira e conducemi Apollo', references Dante's Paradiso, linking the visual representation of the angel to literary themes of divine inspiration and guidance. The print reflects the period's interest in classical motifs combined with Christian iconography, a common feature in European art of the early nineteenth century.
Technically, the work demonstrates the high level of skill required for copperplate engraving. The lines are controlled and deliberate, allowing for subtle gradations of tone that model the figure against the light background. The composition is contained within a simple border, typical of the period's approach to presenting illustrative prints. This piece offers a clear example of the collaborative nature of printmaking during the era, where the original painterly concept was interpreted by the engraver to reach a wider audience. The focus remains on the grace of the figure and the rhythmic quality of the lines, which guide the viewer's eye across the scene.
