This detail captures an angel from the Champmol Altarpiece, a commission for Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. Melchior Broederlam, a Flemish painter active in the late fourteenth century, executed this work for the Charterhouse of Champmol near Dijon. The altarpiece remains a primary example of the International Gothic style, which bridged the gap between medieval traditions and the emerging naturalism of the Northern Renaissance.
The angel is depicted in a dynamic, floating posture, holding a long, unfurled scroll. The figure wears a deep blue mantle over a yellow tunic, contrasting with the vivid red of the wings. Broederlam employs a refined technique, using oil glazes to achieve a luminosity that was advanced for the period. The background features a subtle, textured surface, typical of the decorative sensibilities found in courtly art of the era. The facial features are rendered with delicate precision, reflecting the artist's focus on grace and poise.
Broederlam's work for the Burgundian court demonstrates the transition toward greater spatial awareness and anatomical observation.
