A satirical 1897 lithograph by Willem van Konijnenburg depicting a Dutch city councillor overwhelmed by bureaucratic paperwork during the Amsterdam gas crisis.
This lithograph by Willem van Konijnenburg, published in the Dutch weekly 'De Kroniek' on 7 November 1897, serves as a satirical commentary on the municipal gas crisis in Amsterdam. The composition depicts a city councillor entirely obscured by an overwhelming volume of bureaucratic paperwork, including reports and proposals labelled 'Imperial'. A domestic figure, presumably a maid or wife named Mina, stands to the side, observing the chaos with a sense of bewilderment. The caption captures the absurdity of the situation: 'Mina, is the main valve open? That gas gives no light!'
Van Konijnenburg, better known for his later Symbolist paintings and mystical subjects, demonstrates here a sharp eye for social critique and caricature. The line work is precise and economical, typical of late nineteenth-century press illustrations. The artist employs a clear, narrative style to convey the frustration of the public regarding municipal inefficiency. The clutter of documents spilling off the desk acts as a visual metaphor for the paralysis of local government during the period. The inclusion of a small dog near the councillor adds a touch of domestic realism, grounding the political satire in a recognisable, everyday setting. This print offers a glimpse into the specific political climate of Amsterdam at the turn of the century, where the management of public utilities became a frequent subject of public debate and artistic ridicule. The work is a fine example of the intersection between journalism and graphic art in the Netherlands during the fin de siècle era.
