A late fifteenth-century German panel painting depicting the Flagellation of Christ, characterised by precise line work and narrative detail.
This panel, attributed to the Master of the Schlägl Altarpiece, depicts the Flagellation of Christ. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, bound to a central column, surrounded by his tormentors. The artist employs a narrative approach common to late fifteenth-century German devotional art, focusing on the physical suffering of the subject. The figures are rendered with a specific attention to period costume, including tunics, hose, and headwear typical of the era.
The architectural setting is defined by a stone wall and windows, which provide a sense of enclosure. The perspective is somewhat compressed, a characteristic feature of the period that keeps the viewer focused on the central action. The figures are arranged in a semi-circle, creating a dynamic interaction between the central figure and those inflicting the punishment. The use of line is precise, delineating the musculature of the figures and the textures of their clothing.
This work belongs to a larger altarpiece structure, intended for a church setting where it would have functioned as a visual aid for prayer and contemplation. The emotional weight of the scene is conveyed through the expressions of the figures and the specific gestures of the tormentors. The panel reflects the stylistic conventions of the region, where artists often combined realistic anatomical observation with a formalised approach to composition. The work provides insight into the visual culture of the late medieval period, demonstrating how religious narratives were translated into physical form for a contemporary audience. The preservation of the panel allows for an examination of the painting techniques employed by the workshop, including the application of paint to create depth and the careful detailing of the background elements.
