An 18th-century Dutch etching by Abraham Delfos depicting an allegory of the wool trade in Leiden, featuring classical figures and industrial symbols.
This etching by Abraham Delfos, dated 1763, functions as a visual representation of the wool industry in Leiden. The composition centres on a cartouche, which serves as a frame for text, surrounded by symbols of commerce and civic identity. Delfos employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, using cross-hatching to define form and shadow within the scene.
To the left, a figure in traditional attire gestures towards the central emblem, while on the right, workers attend to bales of wool marked with initials. The inclusion of the Leiden coat of arms, featuring crossed keys, anchors the work in its specific geographic and economic context. Above the cartouche, two putti support a stack of woollen goods, adding a classical decorative element to the industrial subject matter. In the background, the silhouette of a city wall and a ship suggest the importance of trade routes and urban infrastructure to the prosperity of the wool trade.
Delfos was a prolific engraver and draughtsman based in Leiden, known for his documentation of local life and historical subjects. This print reflects the period's interest in civic pride and the systematic categorisation of economic activities through allegory. The work demonstrates a clear, structured approach to narrative, where every element, from the tools of the trade to the heraldic symbols, contributes to a cohesive visual statement about the city's primary industry. The print is executed with a focus on clarity and detail, ensuring that the viewer can identify the various stages of wool processing depicted alongside the symbolic figures.
