A detailed 1648 etching by Salomon Savery commemorating the Peace of Münster, featuring allegorical figures and an accompanying poem.
This etching and engraving by Salomon Savery, dated 1648, serves as a visual and textual commemoration of the Peace of Münster. The treaty concluded the Eighty Years' War, marking the formal recognition of the Dutch Republic as an independent state. Savery employs a complex allegorical language common to the period, blending classical motifs with contemporary political symbolism to articulate the relief and optimism felt by the Dutch populace.
The composition is divided into two distinct sections. The upper portion features a crowded scene of figures in a chariot, representing Peace, accompanied by personifications of virtues such as Liberty (Vryheyt), who hovers above the procession. The architectural elements on the right, including a triumphal arch, signify the stability and newfound sovereignty of the nation. The lower section contains a printed text sheet, or broadside, featuring a poem by Reinier Anslo. This text provides a detailed explanation of the imagery, guiding the viewer through the symbolic narrative of the transition from conflict to prosperity.
Savery, a member of a prominent family of artists, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin and etching needle. The work captures the specific cultural climate of the mid-seventeenth century, where printmaking functioned as a primary medium for disseminating political ideas and historical records. The inclusion of the text block is characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch broadsheets, which were designed to be read and displayed as public declarations of national identity. The print offers a window into the visual rhetoric used to define the Dutch Republic at the moment of its official birth on the European stage. It remains a document of both artistic skill and historical transition, reflecting the collective consciousness of a nation emerging from decades of warfare into a period of relative autonomy and commercial growth.
