A detailed Baroque etching by Grégoire Huret, depicting a classical allegorical scene featuring Neptune and heraldic symbols associated with Cardinal Richelieu.
This print is a fragment of a larger allegorical composition by the French engraver Grégoire Huret. It depicts a scene of maritime power and classical mythology, centred on the figure of Neptune. The god of the sea is shown with his trident, standing beside a female figure who holds a collection of coral. The composition is dominated by a large, ornate coat of arms, which serves as a heraldic anchor for the scene. The inclusion of these classical deities was a common method in seventeenth-century art to elevate the status of political figures, in this case, Cardinal Richelieu, by associating his authority with the command of the seas and divine favour.
Huret was a skilled practitioner of the burin, and this work demonstrates his ability to render complex textures through varied line work. The musculature of the figures, the fluid movement of the water, and the metallic sheen of the heraldic shield are achieved through precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The scene is dynamic, with figures positioned to suggest motion and interaction, typical of the theatrical nature of Baroque art. The Latin inscription visible on the sail, 'NESCIT CVI DOMINO PAREAT VNDA MARIS', translates to 'It does not know which master the wave of the sea obeys', a clear reference to the naval ambitions and political reach of the Cardinal.
This print provides a window into the visual language of the French court during the mid-seventeenth century. It functions as a piece of political iconography, using the weight of classical tradition to legitimise contemporary power. The technical execution reflects the high standards of printmaking in Paris during this period, where such works were produced to circulate the image and influence of the elite across Europe.
