This work is a leaf from an album by Bian Shoumin, a painter associated with the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. The composition features a minimalist arrangement of wild geese near a cluster of reeds. Bian Shoumin is known for his specialised focus on geese, a subject he treated with a distinct economy of brushwork and ink wash. The negative space occupies the majority of the frame, creating a sense of quietude and open water.
The reeds are rendered with swift, calligraphic strokes that suggest movement in a gentle breeze. The geese are depicted with subtle gradations of ink, capturing the soft texture of their plumage and their natural postures. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on the tonal variations of ink to define form and depth.
