A refined nineteenth-century etching depicting a pastoral scene in the Alban Hills, based on a design by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
This fine etching, titled Albano, captures the serene atmosphere of the Italian countryside as interpreted by the German artist Ferdinand Anton Krüger. The work is based on a drawing by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, a prominent figure within the Nazarene movement. This group of artists sought to return to the clarity and sincerity of early Renaissance art, often favouring linear precision and balanced compositions over the dramatic flair of later periods.
The scene depicts a pastoral view near the town of Albano, situated in the Alban Hills south of Rome. In the foreground, a shepherd leads a flock of sheep along a winding path, accompanied by two women carrying baskets upon their heads. The figures are rendered with a focus on classical proportions and calm, rhythmic movement. To the left, rugged rock formations provide a grounding element, while the middle ground reveals a small village with a prominent campanile, suggesting the quiet life of the region.
Krüger employs a refined etching technique, using delicate cross-hatching to define the textures of the terrain, the foliage, and the folds of the figures' garments. The sky remains largely unworked, which allows the viewer to focus on the narrative elements of the rural scene. The composition follows a traditional perspective, drawing the eye from the immediate foreground towards the distant, hazy horizon. This print reflects the period's fascination with the Italian landscape as a site of classical beauty and timeless simplicity. It is a precise example of nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the collaboration between the draughtsman and the engraver aimed to preserve the purity of the original design. The work offers a window into the aesthetic values of the Nazarene circle, prioritising order, clarity, and a gentle, observational approach to the natural world.
