A late fifteenth-century engraving featuring detailed studies of columbine flowers arranged in a circular composition, likely intended as a decorative pattern.
This engraving by the artist known as Meester PW van Keulen, active in the late fifteenth century, presents a series of studies of the columbine flower (Aquilegia). The work is circular in format, a common choice for ornamental designs or patterns intended for metalwork, stained glass, or decorative panels during the Northern Renaissance. The composition features a central, fully bloomed flower surrounded by a ring of eight smaller studies, capturing the plant at various stages of development from bud to full blossom.
The artist employs a precise, clean line quality to define the unique structure of the columbine. The petals, with their characteristic spurs, are rendered with careful attention to botanical accuracy. This approach reflects the period's growing interest in the natural world, where artists sought to document flora with scientific observation. The inclusion of a small cross mark near the centre suggests this print may have functioned as a model or pattern for craftsmen, providing a reference for decorative motifs.
Unlike later, more elaborate floral arrangements, this piece maintains a clear, uncluttered aesthetic. The focus remains entirely on the form and geometry of the columbine. The circular border frames the studies, creating a self-contained design that balances the repetition of the flowers with the negative space of the paper. The engraving demonstrates the technical skill of the period, using hatching to suggest volume and shadow within the delicate petals. As a document of late medieval or early Renaissance printmaking, it offers a view into the intersection of fine art and practical design, where the observation of nature informed the creation of decorative objects for domestic or ecclesiastical use.
