A powerful conceptual work by the Canadian collective General Idea, this 1987 screenprint appropriates the aesthetic of pop art to address the AIDS crisis.
The collective General Idea, formed by AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal, created this work as part of a broader campaign to address the crisis of the 1980s. The design appropriates the visual language of Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE series, replacing the four letters with the word AIDS. By adopting this familiar, pop-art aesthetic, the artists sought to infiltrate public consciousness and normalise the discussion of a topic that was often met with silence or social stigma.
The composition relies on a rigid, four-quadrant grid. The letters are rendered in a bold, red serif typeface, which sits atop alternating blocks of green and blue. This high-contrast colour scheme ensures the text remains legible and immediate, functioning as a public signifier rather than a traditional gallery object. The work was disseminated through various media, including posters, stamps, and public installations, effectively moving the conversation from the private sphere into the urban environment.
This specific print, produced in 1987, reflects the group's interest in the intersection of mass media and political activism. By mimicking the commercial style of advertising, General Idea forced the viewer to confront the reality of the epidemic within the context of everyday life. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct, graphic approach that demands attention. It remains a significant example of how artists utilised visual culture to respond to the urgent social conditions of their time, transforming a clinical acronym into a ubiquitous symbol of awareness and collective action.
