This work depicts the Nativity scene, focusing on the moment shepherds pay homage to the infant Christ. Titian employs a characteristic Venetian approach to light and shadow, using a darkened, rustic setting to draw the viewer's eye toward the luminous figure of the child. The composition is structured around the central figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, with the shepherds entering from the left. The architectural elements, including a classical column, suggest a ruined structure, a common motif in Renaissance depictions of the Nativity that symbolises the transition from the old order to the new.
The painting demonstrates Titian's mastery of colour and texture. The fabric of the garments and the soft glow surrounding the infant are rendered with a fluid, painterly technique.
