A detailed 1749 etching by Jan Punt, reproducing Peter Paul Rubens' Adoration of the Shepherds in a classic octagonal format.
This fine art print is an etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Jan Punt, dated 1749. It reproduces a composition by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the biblical scene of the Adoration of the Shepherds. The work is presented within an octagonal frame, a common format for reproductive prints of the period intended for collectors of Old Master imagery.
In the centre, the infant Christ lies in a manger, emitting a soft light that illuminates the faces of the surrounding figures. To the right, the Virgin Mary leans over the child, while Joseph stands behind her. A group of shepherds approaches from the left, their postures conveying a sense of humble reverence. The inclusion of an ox on the right side provides a traditional iconographic element, grounding the scene in the familiar narrative of the Nativity. The composition relies on the dramatic chiaroscuro typical of Rubens, which Punt translates into a sophisticated range of line work and cross-hatching to suggest volume and texture.
Jan Punt was a skilled engraver and actor, active in Amsterdam during the eighteenth century. His work often involved the reproduction of paintings by celebrated artists, making these images accessible to a wider audience. This particular print demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing the fluid, dynamic energy of the original Rubens painting. The Latin inscription at the base, taken from the Gospel of Luke, identifies the subject matter and provides the necessary context for the viewer. The print is a clear example of the reproductive print culture that flourished in Europe, where the skill of the engraver was measured by their ability to translate the painterly qualities of the original work into the medium of ink on paper.
