A refined stipple engraving of Admiral Lord Viscount Hood, based on an original portrait by Lemuel Francis Abbott.
This stipple engraving depicts Admiral Lord Viscount Hood, a figure of significant naval authority during the late eighteenth century. The print is based on an original painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott, a portraitist known for his depictions of military and naval officers of the period. The work was drawn by W. Evans and subsequently engraved by Charles Picart, demonstrating the collaborative nature of print production in the early nineteenth century.
The portrait captures the subject in a formal bust-length pose, wearing his naval uniform with characteristic braided lapels. The stipple technique, which uses small dots to create tonal variation rather than continuous lines, allows for a soft, painterly quality in the rendering of the face and the fabric of the uniform. This method was highly favoured for portraiture during this era, as it provided a delicate transition of light and shadow that mimicked the appearance of a wash drawing or a miniature painting.
The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the sitter against a neutral, vignetted background. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the facial features and the formal attire, reflecting the conventions of British portraiture at the time. The inclusion of the sitter's title and the names of the original painter, draughtsman, and engraver at the base of the print follows the standard format for historical portrait engravings, which were often produced for inclusion in biographical collections or naval histories. This print offers a clear example of the technical precision achieved by British engravers during the Regency period, providing a record of the visual culture and the individuals who shaped the maritime history of the United Kingdom.
