A precise nineteenth-century engraving by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Müller, depicting the biblical scene of Adam and Eve after the composition by Raphael.
This engraving by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Müller depicts the biblical scene of the Fall of Man. The composition is based on the painting by Raphael, which resides in the Stanza della Segnatura within the Vatican. Müller, a highly skilled engraver, captures the anatomical precision and balanced proportions characteristic of the Neoclassical period.
In the centre, the tree of knowledge serves as the axis for the narrative. The serpent, depicted with a human head, coils around the trunk, offering the forbidden fruit to Eve. She stands to the right, her posture reflecting a classical contrapposto, while Adam sits to the left, his gaze directed toward her. The figures are rendered with smooth, modelled musculature, demonstrating the artist's mastery of line and shadow to create volume on a two-dimensional surface.
The background features a simplified, stylised natural setting, which keeps the focus on the human figures. The foliage is executed with fine, controlled strokes, providing a textured contrast to the soft skin tones of the protagonists. Müller's work is noted for its technical accuracy and its adherence to the aesthetic principles of the early nineteenth century, where the clarity of form was paramount.
This print offers a window into the tradition of reproductive engraving, a practice that allowed audiences across Europe to study the compositions of the Old Masters. By translating Raphael's painted work into the medium of engraving, Müller demonstrates his ability to interpret complex tonal values through the use of hatching and cross-hatching. The result is a refined, monochromatic study that maintains the gravity of the original subject matter while showcasing the technical rigour of the engraver's craft.
