A striking Symbolist woodcut by Mathieu Lauweriks, featuring esoteric iconography and integrated typography related to the mysteries of Isis.
This woodcut by the Dutch architect and designer Mathieu Lauweriks displays the distinct aesthetic of the turn-of-the-century Symbolist movement. The composition features a central winged figure, rendered with a high degree of stylisation, which incorporates esoteric and mythological iconography. The figure is depicted with six breasts, a visual reference to the multi-breasted Artemis of Ephesus, here recontextualised within a narrative concerning the mysteries of Isis and the early chapters of Genesis.
Lauweriks was deeply involved in the Theosophical Society, and his work often reflects a preoccupation with occult geometry and spiritual symbolism. The graphic quality of the print is defined by bold, black-and-white contrasts, typical of the woodcut medium favoured by artists of the period for its ability to convey stark, powerful imagery. The text integrated into the design, reading 'ADAM, ALLEGORISCH DRAMA' and 'INWIJDING IN DE ISISMYSTERIËN', frames the central figure, turning the image into a form of visual manifesto. The lettering itself is highly decorative, echoing the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on European graphic design at the time.
This piece functions as an exploration of the intersection between ancient religious traditions and modern spiritual inquiry. The symmetry of the wings and the rigid, frontal posture of the figure provide a sense of ritualistic order. By combining biblical references with pagan imagery, Lauweriks creates a bridge between disparate belief systems, a common pursuit among artists of his circle. The print serves as a record of the intellectual climate in the Netherlands during the early 1900s, where design was frequently used to communicate complex philosophical ideas. The starkness of the lines and the deliberate lack of perspective emphasise the symbolic nature of the subject matter, prioritising conceptual clarity over naturalistic representation.
