A mid-eighteenth-century Japanese woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu in a graceful courtesan role.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu in the role of a courtesan. The work is a benizuri-e, a style of print that uses a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the black ink outlines. Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, which was active during the mid-eighteenth century in Edo. The print captures the actor in a graceful pose, holding a large hat above his head while carrying a bucket. The figure is positioned against a backdrop of a flowering plum tree, which provides a seasonal context for the scene. The clothing is decorated with geometric patterns, a hallmark of the period's fashion. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure echoed by the branches of the tree. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the early development of multi-colour printing techniques in Japan. The actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu was a popular figure in the kabuki theatre, known for his portrayals of female roles, or onnagata. This print serves as a record of his performance style and the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on subtle tones that complement the paper's natural ageing. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to align multiple blocks for colour application, a process that would eventually lead to the full-colour nishiki-e prints of the later eighteenth century. The work remains an example of the intersection between theatre and visual art in Japanese culture.
