A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Tomijirō in the role of Watonai.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures the actor Nakamura Tomijirō in the role of Watonai, the protagonist of the popular kabuki play Kokusenya Kassen. The print belongs to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which formed a significant portion of the output for Ukiyo-e artists during the Edo period. Bunchō was known for his ability to convey the specific personality and physical presence of performers on the stage, moving away from the more generic depictions common in earlier works.
The composition features the actor in a dynamic pose, set against a backdrop of bamboo stalks. The line work is precise and economical, characteristic of the artist's style. The figure of Watonai is depicted with a sense of theatrical tension, his posture suggesting movement and dramatic intent. The use of negative space and the simplified rendering of the environment focus the viewer's attention entirely on the actor's costume and expression. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the carving and printing process, where the black ink lines define both the form of the figure and the texture of the surrounding elements.
Ippitsusai Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and collaborated with other notable figures such as Katsukawa Shunshō. His work often reflects the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo, who sought mementos of their favourite performers. This particular print provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the theatre, where the actor's identity and the character's narrative were intertwined. The monochromatic nature of the print allows for an appreciation of the graphic quality of the design, where the balance between the figure and the background is maintained through careful arrangement of lines and shapes.
