A dramatic woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniaki II depicting a climactic scene from the classic kabuki play, The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniaki II depicts a climactic scene from the eleventh act of the Kanadehon Chūshingura, a narrative based on the historical vendetta of the forty-seven rōnin. The composition captures the tension between the two central figures: Ōboshi Yuranosuke, portrayed by Kataoka Nizaemon VIII, and Kō no Moronao, played by Bandō Kamezō I. The scene is set against a snowy backdrop, a visual convention in kabuki theatre used to signify the final confrontation of the play.
Kuniaki II employs the characteristic aesthetic of the late Edo period, utilising bold outlines and a palette that balances primary colours with muted tones. The figures are rendered with the exaggerated facial expressions typical of the kabuki stage, conveying the dramatic intensity of the moment. The actor playing Yuranosuke stands in a dominant posture, sword drawn, while Moronao is shown in a defensive, seated position. The surrounding environment is suggested through minimal detail, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two performers.
The print is framed by a geometric border, a common decorative element in nineteenth-century Japanese prints. The inclusion of cartouches provides the necessary context, identifying the actors and the specific act of the play. This work serves as a record of the theatrical culture of the time, documenting both the narrative themes of the Chūshingura and the physical presence of popular kabuki actors. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved woodblock to build the final image. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between popular theatre and visual art in Japan during the mid-nineteenth century.
