Qian Hui'an, a prominent figure of the Shanghai School during the late Qing Dynasty, produced this work as a study in geometric repetition and subtle chromatic variation. The composition consists of a dense, interlocking hexagonal grid, a motif frequently employed in traditional Chinese decorative arts to represent longevity and continuity. Each individual cell contains a stylised floral or geometric emblem, rendered with precise, controlled brushwork that reflects the artist's training in traditional ink painting techniques.
The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones of ochre, soft blue, and faded crimson to define the individual units within the larger structure. This approach creates a rhythmic visual experience, where the eye moves across the surface, identifying the slight differences in the internal patterns of each hexagon. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the principles of classical ornamentation into a structured, repetitive format that feels both disciplined and meditative.
Unlike the more expressive, figure-based works often associated with the Shanghai School, this piece focuses on the technical rigour of pattern design.
