This drawing, attributed to the elusive Monogrammist VCH, depicts the biblical narrative of Abraham and Isaac as they travel toward the site of the intended sacrifice. The composition reflects the stylistic conventions of sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures and a sense of dramatic tension. Abraham is shown carrying the wood for the burnt offering, his expression heavy with the gravity of his task, while the young Isaac walks beside him, carrying the fire and a vessel. The background features a complex, layered setting with architectural ruins and distant figures, typical of the period's interest in creating expansive, theatrical environments for religious subjects.

The artist employs a combination of pen and brown ink with grey wash to define the forms and create depth. The line work is precise, capturing the folds of the drapery and the muscular anatomy of the figures with a deliberate, rhythmic quality. The wash provides subtle modelling, giving the figures a sculptural presence against the lighter background.
