This print represents the cover of the 1795 publication Jinbutsu ryakuga shiki, or Abbreviated Drawing Styles for Figures, by the artist Kuwagata Keisai. Born Kitao Masayoshi, the artist was a prolific figure in the late eighteenth-century Japanese art scene. He initially trained under Kitao Shigemasa before establishing his own distinct approach to illustration. This work is a primary example of his interest in simplified, minimalist forms, which sought to capture the essence of a subject through a limited number of strokes.
