A refined eighteenth-century portrait by Herman van der Mijn, featuring a woman with a spotted dog in a dramatic, dark-toned setting.
Herman van der Mijn, a Dutch painter who spent significant time working in London, produced this work in 1724. The composition features a woman seated in a semi-nude state, draped in a white chemise and a heavy teal mantle. She holds a small dish, her gaze directed towards a spotted dog resting on the rock beside her. The setting is a darkened, wooded area, which provides a dramatic contrast to the pale skin tones of the figure.
Van der Mijn was known for his technical precision and his ability to render textures, particularly fabrics and skin. The teal fabric displays a high degree of detail in its folds and highlights, reflecting the artist's training in the Dutch tradition. The inclusion of the dog introduces a domestic element to what otherwise resembles a classical or mythological scene. The arched top of the canvas suggests it was intended for a specific architectural placement, perhaps as an overdoor or a decorative panel within a grand interior.
This piece demonstrates the artist's command of light and shadow, often referred to as chiaroscuro, to model the form of the woman. The dark, atmospheric background pushes the subject forward, creating a sense of physical presence. The dog, with its distinct markings, provides a textural counterpoint to the smooth skin and the flowing drapery. Van der Mijn's work often bridged the gap between portraiture and allegorical painting, a common practice for artists of his period seeking patronage among the British aristocracy. The painting remains a clear example of the European decorative style prevalent in the early eighteenth century, where classical themes were adapted for private collections.
