Gustave de Smet, a central figure in the development of Flemish Expressionism, produced this work during his period of exile in the Netherlands. Following the outbreak of the First World War, de Smet sought refuge in the Dutch region of Het Gooi. This environment provided a shift in his artistic output, moving away from his earlier luminist tendencies toward a more subjective, simplified approach to form and colour.

The composition features a windmill positioned against a heavy, atmospheric sky. De Smet employs a palette of muted blues, ochres, and earthy tones to convey the mood of the rural Dutch setting.
