An eighteenth-century engraving by Daniel Lerpinière depicting the River Cobre in Jamaica, based on a painting by George Robertson.
This etching and engraving by Daniel Lerpinière, published in 1778, depicts a scene along the River Cobre near Spanish Town, Jamaica. The composition is based on an original painting by George Robertson, who travelled to the island in the 1770s. The print captures the specific topography of the region, featuring a winding river, dense tropical vegetation, and the mountainous terrain characteristic of the area.
Lerpinière employs precise line work to differentiate the textures of the water, the rocky outcrops, and the foliage. The scene includes figures engaged in daily activities along the riverbank, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the natural environment. The work was published by John Boydell, a prominent figure in the London print trade, and dedicated to William Beckford, a wealthy plantation owner.
Such topographical prints were popular in the late eighteenth century, as they allowed European audiences to view distant colonial territories. The engraving style reflects the technical standards of the period, prioritising clarity and descriptive accuracy. The inclusion of the coat of arms and formal dedication at the base of the print aligns with the conventions of eighteenth-century publishing, where such works often served to document the holdings and interests of the British elite. This print remains a historical record of the Jamaican environment as observed by European visitors during the colonial era, offering a glimpse into the visual documentation of the period.
