A refined portrait from 1896 by Julius LeBlanc Stewart, capturing a woman in an elegant gown raising a glass in a toast.
Julius LeBlanc Stewart, an American painter who spent the majority of his career in Paris, captured the social atmosphere of the late nineteenth century with technical precision. In this work, dated 1896, the subject is depicted in a moment of celebration, holding a glass aloft. The composition focuses on the contrast between the subject's elaborate, light-coloured gown and the heavy, dark blue drapery that forms the backdrop.
The artist employs a controlled palette, allowing the warm glow of the lamp in the background to provide a subtle light source that catches the fabric of the dress. Stewart was known for his depictions of the wealthy social circles of Paris, often focusing on the fashion and interior settings of the period. The brushwork is refined, typical of the academic training he received under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta.
This painting reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Belle Époque, a period characterised by a fascination with luxury and social performance. The subject's posture is poised, suggesting a formal or semi-formal gathering. The inclusion of the lamp provides a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figure into the shadowed interior space. Stewart's ability to render textures, from the delicate lace and silk of the gown to the heavy velvet of the curtains, demonstrates his command of the medium. The work remains a representative example of the genre painting popular among the international expatriate community in France during the final decade of the century.
