A naturalist study of a young boy feeding chickens in a sunlit farmyard, painted by the British artist Henry Herbert La Thangue.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a central figure in the Newlyn School, a group of British painters who adopted the French practice of plein air painting. This work, A Sussex Farm, captures a quiet moment of rural labour. A young boy stands in the centre of a farmyard, surrounded by a large flock of chickens that gather around his feet. The composition is grounded in the observation of daily life, reflecting the artist's interest in the realities of agricultural work during the late nineteenth century.
The painting demonstrates the artist's technical approach to light and shadow. The harsh, bright sunlight of the farmyard creates sharp, dark shadows beneath the birds and the boy, suggesting a midday hour. La Thangue uses a controlled palette of earth tones, ochres, and muted greys to render the dusty ground and the varied plumage of the poultry. In the background, a horse and handler move near a thatched barn, providing a sense of scale and activity beyond the immediate foreground. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the textures of the feathers and the rough surface of the yard without unnecessary detail.
La Thangue studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was influenced by the naturalism of Jules Bastien-Lepage. This training is evident in his focus on unidealised subjects and his commitment to painting directly from nature. By choosing to depict the mundane task of feeding livestock, the artist avoids the romanticised view of the countryside often found in Victorian art. Instead, he presents a factual account of a working farm, where the relationship between the human figure and the animals is one of routine and necessity. The work remains a clear example of the naturalist movement in Britain, prioritising the honest representation of the environment over decorative artifice.
